AmeriPlan Dental/AmeriPlan Health Doesn’t “Cover” Anything

    June 30, 2008

    It’s not your fault.

We’ve all become so accustomed to “insurance” lingo that the most common question we ask when looking to buy a dental plan or health plan is “What does it cover?”… and you need to know that. It’s a great question.

It’s funny, well not really, but even when people ask this question, get an answer and buy an “insurance” policy they still have no idea what it “covers”. So many people think they are “covered” by their insurance until something happens and they find out they are not… Which is why you should still have a basic AmeriPlan Dental or AmeriPlan Health package for back up… even if you have “insurance”

But that’s another post.  Back to this one.

To answer the question, “What does AmeriPlan cover?”.  Neither AmeriPlan Dental nor AmeriPlan Health programs “cover” anything.   The major thing you must know is AmeriPlan Is NOT Insurance.  AmeriPlan is a discount-fee-for-service program.  Meaning, if you’re a member (and you should be) you receive dental and health care services at discounted rates… reduced lower than the doctor’s usual and customary fees for other patients. AmeriPlan Corporation doesn’t pay anythingto the doctors.  The doctors have agreements with AmeriPlan to provide their services to AmeriPlan members at reduced fees.  That’s it.  That’s also how all on-going problems are included in Ameriplan Discount Programs.

You give the doctor’s office your card.  They verify your membership then recalculate the charges.  You pay the balance owed with cash, check, debit or credit card… (very few doctors will accept homemade apple pies as payment these days)… and you’re out.  That simple.  Some doctors will even let you make payments on the discounted fee.  That’s entirely up to the doctor though.

So the question should be. “How much of a discount will I get with AmeriPlan?”

Can An AmeriPlan Health Member Who Is In The Patient Advocacy Process Cancel and Still Receive Services?

    June 26, 2008

This question rarely comes up, but it does get asked.  Let’s say you were admitted to the hospital, had several high cost surgeries, or maybe the hospital doctors were able to patch you up and send you home but the bill came out to $15,000.

Let’s then say you’re going through the AmeriPlan patient advocacy process and the hospital (working with your AmeriPlan assigned patient advocate) is going to allow you to pay the hugely discounted rate of $3,000 at $75 per month to satisfy that bill.

Can you cancel your AmeriPlan Health membership?

No.  When you cancel your AmeriPlan Health membership all services associated with it ceases.  This includes AmeriPlan Dental Plus and all AmeriPlan Health program.

God forbid you should ever be in the situation to have to make that decision, but if you just saved $12,000 on one visit to the emergency room.  I think it’s safe to say it pays to keep your AmeriPlan Health memership card in your purse/wallet.
